  • MSD demolished 8 residential properties in summer/fall 2022.
  • MSD has purchased 22 of the 31 homes in the area.

Overview

MSD has been awarded a $4 million hazard mitigation grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (OEMA) to address flooding along Muddy Creek Road in the City of Cincinnati and Green Township.

The $4 million in grant funding, along with an additional $1.5 million from MSD in local cost share, will be used to purchase and demolish up to 31 flood-prone properties along Muddy Creek Road between Glenway Avenue and Westbourne Drive. The homes in this area have been prone to overland flooding and sewer backups for years. They were constructed in the 1950s in and along a former creek bed of Muddy Creek which was enclosed in a sewer to allow the development. The area is recognized by FEMA as an equivalent 100-year floodplain of Muddy Creek.

In 2021, MSD began working with property owners and tenants to acquire the properties and relocate occupants to safe and comparable housing. All property sales are voluntary, and owners must voluntarily elect to participate in this program.

Once the purchased homes are demolished, MSD will work to restore the area to natural floodplain.
