MSD provides professional cleaning services at no charge to eligible property owners and tenants.

 

If your property is authorized for cleaning, an MSD customer service representative will contact you by phone to schedule an appointment with a professional cleaning services company.

 

If your sewer backup was caused solely by private plumbing issues, overland flooding, or another jurisdictional issue, you will not be eligible for cleaning services from MSD.

 

Please note: MSD authorizes properties for cleaning based on an initial finding, erring on the side of protecting public health. Subsequent investigations can sometimes result in a final determination that the sewer backup was not due to the MSD public sewer.

 

To be eligible for cleaning services, these conditions must apply:

 

• You must be an MSD customer. This means your property is in MSD's service area, and it is connected to the public sewer system. 

 

• Your backup was caused by the MSD public sewer. This is determined during the sewer backup investigation and confirmed by an MSD supervisor. NOTE: MSD will also provide professional cleaning services if a private building sewer is broken or collapsed within the public right-of-way (ROW).

 

 

CLEANUP LIMITATIONS

• Our cleanup services are limited to the areas and items affected by the current sewer backup only. Damages from previous backups, or from water intrusion through basement walls, ceilings, floors, doors, or windows are not covered by this program.


• If your property has a history of sewer backups related to the MSD public sewer, you will be advised to store personal property above the high water line when possible. MSD understands it's not always feasible to elevate washers and dryers, hot water heaters, furnaces, etc. above this level.

 

HIRING YOUR OWN PROFESSIONAL CLEANUP CONTRACTOR

If you choose to hire your own professional cleanup contractor, reimbursement is not guaranteed. You will be reimbursed for reasonable cleanup costs if you meet the eligibility requirements for cleaning services. You will not be reimbursed for cleanup costs if the backup was solely caused by a private plumbing issue or overland flooding.

 

Please note that MSD does not reimburse for self cleaning (when you clean the property yourself without using a professional cleanup contractor).
