Commercial and industrial customers must pay for the services provided to them by MSD. These service charges are based on the quantity of water used as measured by a water meter, minus any metered deductions. Commercial and industrial customers that discharge sanitary sewerage, industrial wastes, water or other liquids – other than "normal strength sewage" – either directly or indirectly to MSD may pay a wastewater treatment system surcharge. The surcharge is based on the concentrations of Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids, and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen present in the discharge in addition to the wastewater treatment system service charge. Commercial and Industrial Customers are sampled periodically to determine the levels of BOD, Solids and Nitrogen present. Facilities subject to a surcharge see the cost listed on their Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) billing statement as "Effluent Charges."
